PUPPY Vaccinations

DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus - hepatitis, Parinfluenza - respiratory, and Parvovirus -life-threatening diarrhea) - Core Vaccine
Canine Distemper is a highly contagious neurologic virus spread primarily by sneezing and coughing. While Distemper can infect many different species, dogs are the primary carriers and the virus is life-threatening. Vaccination is essential for the prevention of this virus and has a 98% efficacy rate.
Schedule:
  • First booster administered at 8 weeks old, then every 3-4 weeks for a total of three boosters
  • After the third booster, this vaccine is valid for one year
  • After the first year, this vaccine is given every three years
Rabies - Core vaccine
Rabies is a fatal neurologic virus spread through secretions from an infected animal, most commonly bite wounds from wildlife. While the virus can not survive long outside of a host, it is one for which there is no cure once symptoms present. This is why vaccination is paramount to prevention with a 99% efficacy rate.
Schedule:
  • Administered at 12-13 weeks of age, the first booster is valid for one year
  • After the first year, as long as the booster is administered on/before the date of the previous booster, it is valid for three years. If late, this booster is only valid for one year
Lyme - Optional vaccine
Lyme Disease is most commonly seen from a deer tick bite. While the deer tick is the most common vector (disease carrier) the most common disease host is actually the mouse! Symptoms of Lyme Disease include lameness, fever, and in its advanced stages kidney failure. This optional vaccine is often recommended if you live in heavily wooded areas or if you take your pet hiking/camping etc. This vaccine may also be beneficial if your yard is frequented by wildlife. We will discuss with you at the time of your visit if this vaccine may be beneficial to your pet.
Schedule:
  • Initially a series of two vaccines given 3-4 weeks apart, then updated annually
Leptospirosis - Optional vaccine
Leptospirosis is a life-threatening bacteria most commonly found in standing or slow moving water, and can also be spread through contact with urine from an infected animal (most commonly wildlife). This is a zoonotic disease (spread between humans and animals) and is often hard to diagnose. This bacteria can also be ingested from drinking out of puddles. We will discuss with you at the time of your visit if this vaccine may be beneficial to your pet.
Schedule:
  • Initially a series of two vaccines given 3-4 weeks apart, then updated annually
Bordetella - Optional vaccine
Commonly known as the “Kennel Cough” vaccine given orally, often required by boarding and grooming facilities to reduce the spread of bordetella bronchiseptica
Schedule:
  • Administered yearly
All vaccination requirements, schedules, and recommendations will be discussed with you at your pet’s visit

Kitten Vaccinations

Mercy Animal Hospital is proud to offer the PureVax Feline Distemper and Feline Rabies vaccines. PureVax vaccines are adjuvant-free, and decrease the incidence of injection site reactions sometimes seen with traditional vaccines.
FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
Feline Distemper is a highly contagious life-threatening virus spread through feline bodily secretions (mucus, saliva, blood, etc.). This virus is very stable outside of the body, meaning it is hard to kill and can last years on surfaces at room temperature. Fortunately, vaccine efficacy is about 99% and is essential to prevention.
Schedule:
  • First booster administered at 8 weeks old, then every 3-4 weeks for a total of three boosters
  • After the third booster, this vaccine is valid for one year
  • After the first year, this vaccine is given every three years

Feline Leukemia Virus
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a contagious retrovirus that weakens the immune system and can lead to anemia, lymphoma, and various cancers. FeLV is spread through close contact with other infected cats, primarily via saliva (grooming, shared bowls, bite wounds, and from mother to kittens). We recommend outdoor cats receive the FeLV vaccine due to a higher exposure risk. While there is no treatment for Feline Leukemia, prevention through vaccination is crucial to stop the spread of this virus.
Schedule:
  • Initial vaccination is a series of two doses given 3–4 weeks apart. The second vaccination in the series is valid for one year.
  • After the initial series, this vaccination is boosted annually.
All vaccination requirements, schedules, and recommendations will be discussed with you at your pet’s visit

Dr. Scotto is one of the finest Veterinarians I have ever met. Her love for animals shines through in her kind and gentle manner, especially during the darkest times. We said goodbye to our sweet baby after 16 years, and we couldn't have asked for anyone better than Dr. Scotto to assist our girl to a better place. We are very fortunate to have her at Mercy Animal Hospital. RIP Myla 💖

I can’t thank Dr. Scotto enough for her compassionate care and her incredible staff for helping us through a very difficult time. We have been with Mercy Animal Hospital for 28 years and I can sincerely say that Dr. Dina is carrying  on with the same level of excellence as we’ve come to know at Mercy. Our little Sophie was treated with the utmost respect and care. We are so thankful and appreciative of all of you there at Mercy Animal Hospital
