Prevention and Testing

We recommended all puppies receive heartworm, flea and tick prevention. We test for heartworms, and tick borne diseases starting at 7-8 months of age, and then either annually or bi-annually depending on how often prevention is given. In the northeast heartworm, flea and tick prevention is recommended year round.
While there are many different types of prevention available, we recommend the following:
  • HeartGard - a monthly chewable tablet to prevent heartworms, as well as hook and round worms (two types of intestinal parasites)
  • NexGard - a monthly chewable tablet to prevent tick borne diseases and fleas

Spaying and Neutering

We recommend spaying (female) or neutering (male) anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half of age. This aligns with the AAHA’s (American Animal Hospital Association) standard of care. The decision of when to spay or neuter your pet is based on many factors and can vary from pet to pet. We will discuss the best option for you and your pet at your visit.

We recommend all kittens be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Felv-FIV). This is a simple blood test we can run at the time of your visit and have results in a few minutes.

Dr. Scotto is one of the finest Veterinarians I have ever met. Her love for animals shines through in her kind and gentle manner, especially during the darkest times. We said goodbye to our sweet baby after 16 years, and we couldn't have asked for anyone better than Dr. Scotto to assist our girl to a better place. We are very fortunate to have her at Mercy Animal Hospital. RIP Myla 💖

I can’t thank Dr. Scotto enough for her compassionate care and her incredible staff for helping us through a very difficult time. We have been with Mercy Animal Hospital for 28 years and I can sincerely say that Dr. Dina is carrying  on with the same level of excellence as we’ve come to know at Mercy. Our little Sophie was treated with the utmost respect and care. We are so thankful and appreciative of all of you there at Mercy Animal Hospital
